Opinion: <Introduction of Korean to National Center for University Entrance Examinations' Tests> -2001 March 9th (Friday)

I am against the very use of foreign languages as a subject for the university placement examinations. This is because even when foreign languages are employed for the entrances examinations, and even after studying these languages for years, the effort comes to serve no purpose in the lives of these students. Even Americans themselves look at the grammar questions and often have no idea what the correct answers are. (Click here to continue)

Opinion: <Slight Increase in the Initial Employment Rate> -2001 March 9th (Thursday)

When I am asked what is the one key area that is responsible for the Japan's economic maladies, without hesitation I respond that it is the employment practices in Japan. These practices are of great concern to the economy. The unemployment rate of 4.9% is a figure that was never seen before in Japan and - what's more - this has the potential to rise even higher. Opinion: <Diving into Education> -2001 March 6th (Tuesday)

"Education is a journey of self-discovery." I find this to be a very telling description.
Postwar Japan has been able to profit on the economic front through standard large-scale production. Furthermore, going along the thinking of groups like the Socialist and Communist Parties, the idea of an elite education has been replaced with one that is uniform. But the era of standard large-scale production and uniform education has already ended. (Click here to continue)

Opinion: <This Time It's "Nay" to the Non-confidence Vote> -2001 March 5th (Monday)

Today the cabinet was subjected to a non-confidence proposal presented by the opposition parties. After debate, the resolution was defeated with 274 against and 192 for the measure, of a total of 466 votes. This time I voted against the proposal. However, last autumn, the Kato and Yamazaki factions (the latter to which I belong) were going to support a non-confidence proposal, but in the end they simply did not attend the vote, effectively keeping the cabinet in power. This time, why did we decide to attend and vote against the measure? (Click here to continue)

Opinion: <The Textbook Issue> -2001 March 2nd (Friday)

The Japanese textbooks currently in the certification process are being barraged with criticism by China and Korea. These books are slated to be released this year and will be put into use in 2002. And 2002 has wider educational changes underfoot, including the switch to a five-day long school week and the application of new guidance policies. Before diving into China and Korea's complaints, we must first look procedurally at the process in which the contents of the textbooks were leaked in advance prior to the certification. Opinion: <A New Look at Economic Policy> -2001 February 23rd, (Friday)

LDP policy chief Kamei recently visited President Yamazaki of the Near Future Research Committee so once again the discussion naturally led to economic policy. My opinion on economic policy is as follows.
1) Quantitative Easing Theory
2) Inflation Targeting
3) Treasury Stock

Opinion: <What Do You Thinks of These Figures?> -2001 February 23 (Friday)

According to today's news, the powerful U.S.-based rating agency Standard & Poor's has downgraded Japan's international ranking from the highest AAA to AA+. Minister of Finance Miyazawa called this maneuver "odd" and Yanagisawa, head of the Financial Services Agency, called it "unwanted meddling." I sympathize with their comments, but - putting that aside - how should we think of the following figures for Japan: (Click here to continue)
